NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Starting July 1, the city will ban private cars from most of 14th Street in Manhattan in an effort to speed up bus service while repairs are made on the L train.

Only buses and trucks will be allowed on 14th Street between Third and Ninth avenues. The restrictions will be in place every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Cars will only be allowed to make pick-ups and drop-offs on 14th Street.

The 18-month pilot program will include the launch of the new M-14 select bus service, which will let riders pay before they board.
