NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The NYPD is searching for two men who allegedly tried to rob an on-duty, plainclothes police officer in Midtown Thursday night.

The New York Daily News reports a police captain was working when the two men in their 20's walked up to him at 41st Street and 10th Avenue.

The suspects fled after one of them punched the captain in the head.

The captain had pulled his weapon on the two suspects after getting hit, but did not fire.

The men ran away empty handed, officials say.

The captain suffered minor injuries.
