NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The NYPD believes two shooters were responsible for a shooting at an outdoor event in Brooklyn that killed one man and wounded several others Saturday night.

Seven men and five women, ages 21 to 55, were among the victims, according to police. One man is said to be "fighting for his life" in very critical condition and a 38-year-old man died from a single bullet wound to his head.

The shooting began at around 11 p.m. just as the crowd at the annual Old Timers Event in Brownsville was dispersing, the NYPD said. It’s believed the incident was gang related.

“Several of (the victims) has gang histories, whether or not that played any role in the shooting or the motive is still undetermined,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

Hundreds of people were still at the event and dropped everything when gunfire erupted. As of Monday morning, remnants of the panicked stampeded were still visible, according to WCBS 880’s Sean Adams.

“I heard two shots go off and then I was hit in my back and I couldn't breathe. Everybody was surrounding me. My heart is racing. I was fainting in and out of it. I couldn't stand up,” Daniza Murdoch said.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said the shooting “was a tragic end to a wonderful weekend” but that the incident will not stop the annual event from happening in the future.

“It’s a great event. On Friday nights there’s 5,000 people, Saturday nights there’s about 2,000 people,” he said. “They don’t want to be defined by this. This event will continue, it means a lot to the community.”

The NYPD says one gun has been recovered but no arrests have been made.
