$20,000 Reward Offered For Safe Return Of Stolen Bald Eagle

July 24, 2019 - 2:32 pm

QUOGUE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- The reward for a stolen bald eagle has grown to $20,000.

The 35-year-old bald eagle, named Sammy, was stolen from the Quogue Wildlife Refuge eight days ago.

He was taken from his enclosure in the early hours of July 16.

Sammy has lived at the Suffolk County facility since 1988, when it suffered an injury that forced the partial amputation of its wing leaving it unable to fly.

Possession of a bald eagle, which is a federally protected species, is a federal offense punishable by fines and jail time. But the director of the refuge just wants the bald eagle back safe and sound — no questions asked.

Anyone with information is asked to call Quogue Village Police Department at 631-653-4791, Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS or Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
