ELMONT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Four teenagers were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Long Island Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 3:40 p.m. at Elmont Road and Dutch Broadway, behind the Elmont Memorial Junior – Senior High School.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said there was a three-car crash about 50-yards from where the group of teens was walking. A fourth car swerved to avoid the accident and struck the group.

“One of the vehicles left the road, as it was going westbound, struck a tree and then a poll,” Ryder explained. “There were four kids that were standing there on the sidewalk, just left school; they were struck by that vehicle and that vehicle that overturned.”

Police officials said three of the victims were female and all were around 15-years-old.

Two of the girls were listed in serious condition after a Medevac helicopter rushed them to a nearby hospital.

The investigation remains ongoing. It was unclear if any of the drivers involved in the accidents were injured.
