Here are six heart-stopping rescues performed by the United States Coast Guard to celebrate its founding 228-years-ago in 1790. Officers of the U.S. Coast Guard are experts on the seas -- from saving seals to seizing millions in illegal drugs -- but they risk their lives to save those in need.

Mudslides

During deadly California mudslides, a Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued people from the deadly natural disaster, including this family of 5 and two dogs.

Hurricanes

Hurricane Harvey was another tragedy that called for all hands on deck. Crews worked nearly round the clock in Houston back in 2017 to rescue as many people as possible.

Disabled Ships

A 77-year-old man was sailing with his dog off the coast of San Diego in 2011 when their ship became disabled. Thankfully the Coast Guard were able to get the two of them safely transported back to land.

While this insane footage shows rescuers pulling a family of four struggling to stay afloat after their boat began to sink off the coast of Florida.

Flooding

Historic flooding that rocked Louisiana in 2016 called for drastic helicopter search and rescue teams saving people stranded on rooftops.

Rescue

It’s not always natural disasters, though. Here, a 24-year-old man had to be airlifted after he kayaked over an 80-foot waterfall in Washington state.

When disaster strikes, the U.S. Coast Guard are fearless in performing daring rescues. Happy Birthday, Coast Guard!
