NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Good news in on the way for No. 7 train riders.

New York City Transit President Andy Byford announced a new repair project is getting underway as another is close to wrapping up.

"Thanks for bearing with us, we're on the home straight for line 7 resignaling," Byford said during a news conference Tuesday.

Byford said the new signal system on the 7 line should be completed by the end of the year.

"It ultimately allows you to run more trains because you can safely run trains closer together," Byford said.

The newest improvements will be on the elevated tracks in Jackson Heights.

Congressman Joe Crowley also announced a repainting project.

"You just simply can't paint over rotten paint or bad paint or bad steel or bad concrete," Crowley said.

The work will also include structural repairs.
