NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A woman is dead and her husband is in critical condition after they were stabbed in their Brooklyn home on Saturday night, and police say it wasn’t a random attack.

NYPD officers found the 71-year-old woman stabbed to death inside a condo at Bushwick Avenue and Garden Street in Bushwick around 7 p.m. Saturday.

Her 87-year-old husband had also been stabbed, but was still alive. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.

Crime scene tape was still up Sunday as investigators came in and out of the home.

No arrests have been made yet, but law enforcement sources tell WCBS 880 that the suspect was known to the couple.

Several neighbors identified the woman as Maria Rodriguez. They said she was fond of sitting on her front steps, waving to people and feeding pigeons.

“She was a kind old lady to me,” Felix Peralta said. “I never knew any violence or anything next door.”

Peralta said he was stunned to wake up and see crime scene tape and investigators going in and out of the home next door: “It’s unbelievable.”

Vivian Green lives across the street. She said she saw the couple outside often.

“I mean I’m just in a state of shock,” she said. “Last night, I just got to crying uncontrollable.”

Neighbors say the husband was in deteriorating health and that he used a walker and may have been confined to a wheelchair.
