DIX HILLS, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Suffolk County police are investigation the murder of a Dix Hills man whose body was found inside his home Tuesday night.

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported, Armindo Reis, 74, lived alone in a Penn Drive home and when a neighbor couldn’t get in touch with him, his son was called and the shocking discovery was made.

“It’s sad, I’m very sad about it,” the neighbor told WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall.

Reis’ son arrived at the Dix Hills home just after 6 p.m. and found the 74-year-old unconscious, according to police. He called 911 and a physician assistant pronounced Reis dead at the scene.

Hall reports that the murder is particularly shocking for the normally quiet dead-end street, where Reis lived for over 30 years.

Suffolk County Police Lt. Kevin Beyrer says Reis suffered a gunshot wound in the head and it does was not appear to be a random attack.

“There’s no signs that it was a home invasion. We’re looking into his background – both personal and financial,” Beyrer said.

The neighbor who tried to contact Reis Tuesday notes that the 74-year-old had overcome many obstacles in life, making his death particularly tragic.

“The youngest son, when he graduated high school, he gave him a Corvette and the kid racked up the Corvette and died – and his wife became a recluse after that, a few years later, she passed away,” he told Hall.

He adds that Reis had a girlfriend whom he spent much of his time with, but he had become worried when he saw a suspicious man leaving the home in the middle of the afternoon.

Suffolk County detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
