NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Eight people were injured Thursday afternoon when a taxi slammed into a Manhattan restaurant.

The cab crashed into the restaurant, Westville, around 12:30 p.m. in Hell’s Kitchen.

According to the FDNY, eight people suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Five were transported to nearby hospitals.

Surveillance video shows the yellow cab losing control, driving on to the curb on Ninth Avenue and 54th Street, striking several people and plowing into the restaurant.

The restaurant manager told CBS2 that two women eating in the pathway of the cab managed to jump out of the way before they could be seriously injured.

The driver of the vehicle says he was stopping to pick up a fare when another car struck him from behind, causing him to drive up onto the curb.

“I thought if I brake, it would be a massive crash,” he explained.

Inspectors found that impact caused minor damage to the restaurant doors but there was no structural damage to the building.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
