NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Police are searching for the person who robbed and attacked an elderly couple inside their Long Island home.

At around 11:30 p.m. Thursday after bible study class, authorities say someone knocked on the front door of their Greenlawn home on a normally quiet street, and pushed themselves inside. The 90-year-old pastor was punched and his 75-year-old wife was slashed with a knife on her arm and hand, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"The wife was stabbed in her hand. She has three stitches on her arm -- three on the upper arm and nine on the lower arm by her thumb. He has [a> bump on his forehead and his chest and some laceration on his cheek," one neighbor said.

The suspect stole cash, a credit card and the church van, which was parked in the driveway.

The couple's grandson says his grandparentsare so generous they would have just given the suspect money.

"Normally, they'd be like, 'Ok, come tomorrow and we'll help you out.' There's no beef here. There's no nothing. It's not Democrat, not Republican -- this is just God's house right here," he said.

A neighbor told Hall the couple was well-liked and that they were likely targeted.

"So obviously it was somebody probably canvassing their house and maybe they followed them from the church whatever the case may be," he said. "I think they were targeted, I think it was something that was planned out."

"I was really upset, I couldn't believe it. I was in shock. They're a quiet family, a quiet couple, they would often help people in the community all the time," another neighbor said.

The couple suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the attack.

So far no arrests have been made.
