House To Vote On 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Bill This Week

July 09, 2019 - 4:57 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The full House will vote Friday on a bill to renew the 9/11 Victim Compensation Bill.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced the vote on Twitter saying the heroes who ran into harm's way that day deserve swift action.

The Senate is expected to vote on the bill next month.

The names James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer and Lou Alvarez are now part of the “Never Forget the Heroes Act.”

Rob Serra, a retired firefighter, who pushed for the bill with Pfeifer and Alvarez, said, “They both knew they were dying. They both knew that they did not have much time left, but they still kept fighting, you know? And that says a lot.”

He is hopeful that the bill would be passed by the end of the summer. If not, he says advocates will continue to fight.

Alvarez's name was added to the bill less than a week after his funeral. Before he died, Alvarez said he wanted the passage of the bill to be his legacy.

Now, that would be true in a formal way.

“Very happy, very proud of it,” said his brother Phil Alvarez about the bill being named after his brother.
