Here Comes The Holiday Travel Woes

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — It’s going to be a record-breaking year for holiday travel.

According to AAA’s Robert Sinclair, over 100 million people are expected to hit the roads, rails and airports beginning next week.

He predicts Thursday, Dec. 20 will be the busiest holiday travel day in the Tri-State.

“People getting ready for the holiday, people shopping, maybe getting an early start to get to their holiday destination,” Sinclair said.

AAA data predicts 112.5 million Americans will be traveling, a 4.4 percent increase over last year’s number. It’s also the largest amount of travelers since AAA started tracking in 2001.

Sinclair says the increase is due to a number of reasons including, “a strong economic growth that we're seeing, robust consumer spending and cheaper gasoline.”

He notes that over the past month, gasoline prices have plummeted and the national average is down 28 cents.

AAA is anticipating some cities to have quadruple travel time and shows that 9:30 – 10:30 p.m. on Thursday will be the worst time for travel in New York City.

The busiest days to fly are the Saturday and Sunday before Christmas. But, AAA said if you book last minute, you may be able to get a deal.

Orlando, Florida is the most popular destination over the holidays.

Travelers should be advised of the upcoming Gridlock Alert days, including Dec. 13, 14, 20 and 21.
