NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Stories of sexual abuse at the hands of nuns are starting to spread, dealing another potential blow to the reputation of the Catholic Church.

Mary Dispenza, a director of a network of survivors of abuse by church officers, says she’s heard from around 40 people so far who have claimed to be abused by nuns.

She believes this is only the tip of the iceberg and that the numbers will continue to grow.

The New York Post spoke to Cait Finnegan, a victim who says she was abused by Sister Mary Juanita Barto at Mater Christi High School in the 1960s, who says she still can’t bring herself to discuss the abuse.

A new New York law was recently passed which opens a window for survivors of abuse to file suit regardless of the statute of limitations.

Dispenza believes the new law could offer a glimpse into how widespread this problem really is

“It’s allowing thousands of survivors to have their day in court, to walk in the light,” she said.
