Activists Rally In NYC Against Gun Violence, Illegal Guns

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — In wake of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, some local activists gathered in Foley Square on Monday to urge Washington to take action.

Holding signs that read “Gun Violence is a Public Health Risk,” protesters chanted “Enough is Enough” as they demanded lawmakers pass a number of gun control measures. Many pointed to the flow of illegal guns.

"When an unlicensed seller puts guns on the street, there's nothing holding them accountable for background checks. When one state has guns outlawed and they're legal in another state, right now, the (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) does not have the authority to stop this flow," said the Reverend Ron Sullivan.

He notes that without controlling the flow of illegal guns, "We are sending our law enforcements into this gun fight with legislative pillows right now."

Participants included New York families who were victims of gun violence and federal, state and city elected officials.

Activists called for the repeal of two federal laws that restrict investigations into gun crimes and the prosecution of unscrupulous gun dealers.
