NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Adam Savage, star of Discovery Channel’s “Mythbusters,” is back with a new book.

The book titled, “Every Tool's a Hammer: Life Is What You Make It,” Savage chronicles his life “as a maker” and shares his “golden rules of creativity.”

In an interview with WCBS 880’s “Author Talks” podcast, he says the book is a permission slip to “geek out” over the things that interest you.

And he adds that “geek” is not a bad thing to be!

“Whenever you peel the layers of an onion of something and really start to go all the way, as I say in the book, through the wormhole, through the bottom of the rabbit hole, you're gonna find yourself,” Savage says.

He says exploring your creativity is the key to finding out what you’re passionate about and what you “geek out” about.

“That's what you're looking for, you're looking for those things that resonate with the strings inside of us that allow us to participate in our culture,” Savage says. “When you follow those passions, they inspire you. And they, for me, they inspired me to make something.”

For some, like WCBS 880’s Wayne Cabot and Savage, following your “geeky passion” can even lead to a career.

The two open up about their unusual passions and Cabot unveiled a list of broadcast channels that he’d tune into as a child, before the invention of cable TV – which Savage said proved he was “groomed” to do what he does.

He says the list is a perfect example of how people can be creative in more ways that just physical.

“Making is storytelling, it’s building films, it’s making clothing, it’s making tables – it’s everything. Every time you reach out to make something from nothing,” Savage says.
