NEW YORK (WCBS 880) --  Having more speed cameras around New York City schools just got a final green light.

Right now, 140 speed cameras are in operation on streets near city schools. The city council gave Albany a thumbs up in the form of a 44-3 vote to approve a home rule message that would allow hundreds more cameras

"This would authorize the state legisture to pass a bill that would  allow the city to deploy up to 750 speed limit enforcement camera in school safety zones across the city,"     City Council Speak Corey Johnson.

The new higher number of speed cams will now have longer operating hours and broader geographic flexibilty, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.

The cameras will only be placed in areas near schools - not on other roadways or at random intersections, Lamb reported.
