Amazon Ad Appeals To NYC: ‘Happy New Year From Your Future Neighbors’

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Amazon is making an effort to appeal to residents of Long Island City ahead of its move there.

A full-page ad in the New York Post and New York Daily News on Saturday came in the form of a letter from Amazon.

The letter outlines ways Amazon will benefit the community: more jobs, career training, support for local education and small businesses.

It’s directed at people like Theresa, who grew up in Long Island City. She says they’re forgetting a few things.

“The congestion is going to be out of control,” she said. “The traffic situation. Parking is already a nightmare.”

She also says rents are skyrocketing. But she doesn’t plan to leave, even if she watches her friends being priced out of their apartments.

Amalia has lived in the neighborhood for 31 years.

“The politicians did not do enough in terms of guaranteeing affordable housing,” she said. “Like really affordable housing.”

Some people WCBS 880's Mack Rosenberg spoke with, like Juan, say they can understand why Amazon would choose Long Island City for its new headquarters.

“A lot of traffic. There’s a lot of businesses making money,” Juan said. “The city’s growing. Long Island City’s growing now.”

He works here and takes the subway, so he says he’s not happy by the news.
