MINEOLA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) – NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids is holding its 18th annual family run/walk event on Long Island to benefit children with cancer.

Dr. Mark Weinblatt says all age groups are encouraged to attend the event, which raises tens of thousands of dollars for programs to help children through a difficult time in their lives.

“In order to make life a little bit easier for them and to decrease a lot of their fears and anxiety,” Weinblatt said. “When they come to the center, we have some people with a great deal of expertise who use medical play, which means having the children do different activities that are fun for them but at the same time help to relieve a lot of their anxiety.”

Weinblatt says some of the patients participate in the event and that the money raised will help fund the music therapy program.

The run/walk will be held at Eisenhower Park in Westbury on Sept. 22.
