DENVILLE, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey state Sen. Anthony Bucco has died.

A spokesman says the 81-year-old suffered “a major heart attack” Monday morning and died in the evening at Saint Clare's Hospital in Denville.

The Republican represented the 25th legislative district for 24 years. The district includes parts of Morris and Somerset counties. Bucco also was the Senate Republican conference leader.

The Boonton resident previously served as a mayor, freeholder and assemblyman.

In a statement while on a trade mission to India, Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy called Bucco a “dedicated public servant and successful businessman.”

He was also president and CEO of an adhesives company in Paterson.

Republicans in the district will pick a replacement who will serve until a special election is held.
