June 08, 2019 - 11:32 am

SOUTHOLD, N.Y. (WCBS 880/AP) -- Authorities say a small plane has crashed on Long Island, killing the man and woman on board.

The Federal Aviation Authority said in a statement that the Beechcraft A36 plane crashed in Southold, New York at around 9:15 a.m. Saturday.

Southold Chief of Police Martin Flately says a man and woman -- the only two on board -- were killed.

The victims' names were not immediately released.

A dog was also on board the plane and somehow survived the crash, police told CBS 2. The dog was reportedly retrieved by friends of the victims after a farmer found the animal.

Flately says the aircraft was flying from Long Island's MacArthur Airport to New Bedford, Massachusetts when it experienced "some type of mechanical failure'' and crashed.

Newsday reported that the plane crashed in a field at the Harbes Family Farm.

The FAA said it will investigate the crash along with the National Transportation Safety Board.
