2 City Peace Officers On Desk Duty After ‘Appalling’ Video Shows NYPD Prying Baby From Mom's Arms

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Two city peace officers are on desk duty after a disturbing viral video showed them ripping a baby from his mother's arms at a food stamp office in Brooklyn.

The video has sparked outrage online and calls for justice from community leaders.

It all started when police were called to the SNAP benefits center on Bergen Street in Boerum Hill on Friday.

Witnesses say a woman waiting for help with childcare services sat on the ground with her child because there were no seats left.

The woman, identified by police as Jazmine Headley, argued with a security officer, who told her that sitting on the floor was not allowed.

NYPD officers were called when Headley refused to leave the office.

The video posted to Facebook Friday shows police trying to separate the woman and child as onlookers cried out.

“It starts with the police yanking our client’s child out of her arms while she’s on the floor as she’s screaming: ‘My baby, my baby, you’re hurting my baby,’” said Lisa Schreibersdorf, executive director of Brooklyn Defender Services.

“Oh my God! Oh my God! Look what they doing to her!” one woman can be heard shouting.

At one point it appears Headley can be heard shouting, “You’re hurting my son! You’re hurting my son!”

Nyashia Ferguson recorded the two-minute video of the altercation.

She told CBS2 that she couldn’t believe what she was witnessing.

“I was just so disgusted, I couldn’t believe they was doing that to that child,” Ferguson said. “It was crazy.”

Headley faces several charges, including resisting arrest and acting in a manner injurious to a child. She is being held at Rykers Island on an unrelated warrant.

The boy is reportedly with another family member.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams denounced the incident and said he’s heading to the SNAP center on Monday to call for the NYPD to drop charges against Headley.

“Looking like Border Patrol police, snatching away babies and children,” Adams said at a press conference Monday.

“Something's terribly wrong when the most well-trained police department can't resolve a dispute with a mother and child without looking like @RealDonaldTrump's southern border strategy,” Adams added on Twitter. “We must do better.”

Meanwhile, City Council Speaker Cory Johnson is calling for an investigation.

“This is unacceptable, appalling and heart breaking,” Johnson he posted to Twitter. “I’d like to understand what transpired and how these officers or the NYPD justifies this.”
