NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The Mets open their season a week from Thursday and will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Miracle Mets World Series team.

When it became clear, even two years ago, that Tom Seaver wasn’t going to make it to New York for the Mets’ World Series anniversary, former '69 teammate Art Shamsky decided to bring the reunion to him.

Shamsky and teammates Bud Harrelson, Jerry Koosman and Ron Swoboda travelled to California to see Tom in May 2017.

“Just getting out to see Tom and have him reminisce with the guys was really very, very special,” Shamsky said.

Seaver’s family recently announced that Seaver is suffering from dementia.

Back in ’69, the Mets went from 73 wins to 100 and defeated the favored Baltimore Orioles in the World Series.

Shamsky said, “We were all young. Really, we all grew together as a team. We only had a couple of guys in their ‘30s. At that point, and again, it was the strong influence of Gil Hodges as manager.”
