HOWELL TOWNSHIP, N.J. (WCBS 880) – A man who was found dead after an apparent brutal killing along a quiet New Jersey road has been identified.

The Monmouth County prosecutor's office says the body of Domingo Merino Rafael, 33, was found on Hurley Pond Road Friday morning.

He was discovered lying face down by a passerby, and one witness told NBC4 his face appeared to have been hacked.

Authorities said Rafael, of Lakewood, had severe head trauma and that his death has been ruled a homicide.

Police sources told NBC4 that investigators first believed he was the victim of a hit-and-run but that it appeared he had been killed.

The source said he may have been attempting to get away from his attackers by jumping from a vehicle onto the street but was ultimately captured by them.
