Authorities Searching For Missing Swimmer Off Long Beach

June 25, 2018 - 8:27 am

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- For the second time in less than a week a swimmer is missing off the coast of Long Island.

Authorities said three friends decided to go out for a swim in the middle of the night in Long Beach early Monday. Around 3 a.m., authorities say two of them came out of the murky water off Long Beach Boulevard and realized one was missing. They searched the water for about 15 minutes before calling 911.

"We had multiple boats and helicopters looking for him. Some of our police officers immediately entered the water to try to search around the jetties and they were unable to locate him," Long Beach Fire Commissioner Scott Kemins said.

Helicopters and marine units had been combing the water for hours searching for the man. He is 31 years old and from Brooklyn.

This is the second search for a missing swimmer in less than a week in Long Beach.

On Sunday, a body was found in the ocean off Long Beach. Officials are not saying if it is the 10-year-old boy who went missing last Tuesday.
