Billy Joel Plays 100th Madison Square Garden Show

July 18, 2018 - 2:48 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Billy Joel was about to take the stage at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night for the 100th time in his career.

Joel grew up on Long Island and always dreamed of playing at The Garden.

"You could play almost any other arena in the country and nobody else in the world is going to know about it, but when you play Madison Square Garden, the entire world knows that you played Madison Square Garden," Joel said. "I couldn't think of better way to peak in my life than this."

To commemorate the milestone, Gov. Andrew Cuomo proclaimed July 18, 2018 as "Billy Joel Day" in New York.

"He is a quintessential New Yorker, he's a quintessential middle class, working-family New Yorker," Cuomo said.

The new record is in part thanks to his monthly residency at The Garden, which began four years ago.

Joel 's first performance at MSG was in Dec. 14, 1978. Now, 100 shows later he's sold 2 million tickets at the venue.

Past gigs have included numerous solo shows and a special tour with Elton John.

Every show has sold out.

The 69-year-old has had 33 top 40 hits.

The commemorate his 100th MSG show, Joel's piano will be displayed at the venue.
