NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The search for a missing NYPD homicide detective ended tragically in Brooklyn Thursday afternoon.

The Detectives' Endowment Association confirmed the body of Det. Joseph Calabrese, 58, was found late in the afternoon amid a missive at Plumb Beach. Authorities believe he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Dozens of officers had combed through the Sheepshead Bay area throughout the day with K-9s, boats and helicopters. Multiple eastbound lanes on the Belt Parkway were also shut down, causing traffic to build up for miles.

Calabrese was last seen around 2 a.m. His car was found abandoned at Plumb Beach about an hour later.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams responded to the tragic discovery on Twitter, writing, “It is so difficult to fathom the pain of a suicide in our @NYPDNews family. I cannot begin to explain the anguish of experiencing two back-to-back. We mourn the tragic loss of @NYPDBklynSouth Detective, @NYCPDDEA Trustee, and Brooklynite Joseph Calabrese.”

The 58-year-old, who was with the Brooklyn South Homicide Squad, had been on the force since 1982.
