WATCH: Mayhem After Brinks Truck Loses Cash On New Jersey Highway

December 13, 2018 - 12:23 pm

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- Commuters had a reason to stop on their way to work Thursday morning after an armored truck spilled cash on a New Jersey highway.

Cash was raining down along with the snow around 8:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Route 3 in East Rutherford near MetLife Stadium after a Brinks truck apparently had a problem with the locking device on one of its doors, sending money flying onto the roadway.

There were multiple crashes as drivers stopped to grab the money. Video from the chaotic scene showed one vehicle with its front end smashed in and airbags deployed.

Videos posted to social media showed people ditching their cars to snatch up the cash. A man in uniform, believed to be the Brinks truck driver, could also be seen running through traffic trying to collect the money.

It's not clear how much money was inside the truck. An audit will determine how much cash was lost.

Police are looking for people who were seen on the highway picking up the money.
