NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A street in the Bronx was re-named today in honor of a local activist who died last year.

The northwest corner of 233rd Street and Murdock Avenue, in the Eastchester area of the borough, is now also Sandy E. Gresham Way.

“Sandy has the heart of a lioness,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the ceremony. “When it came to the struggle, when it came to activism, she wanted to change this world and she did something about it.”

Gresham died just a few months after recovering from a coma, at the age of 58.

New York City advocate Tish James was at the re-naming ceremony as well and told crowds that Gresham’s legacy will live on.
