NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The search is on for a man accused of robbing a cab driver who was killed by his own taxi while trying to chase the suspect in the Bronx over the weekend.

Late Sunday night, police say a passenger stole the driver's backpack from the front seat as he left the cab.

The driver got out and attempted to chase the suspect, but was run over by the vehicle after he apparently forgot to put it in park.

Officers found the driver lying unconscious in the middle of the street on Seward Avenue with head trauma.

The driver, identified as 65-year-old Mohammad Zafrullah of Brooklyn, later died at the hospital.

The NYPD has released a surveillance image of the robbery suspect, who remains on the loose.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
