Cabs Owned By Former ‘Taxi King,’ Michael Cohen Abandoned In Queens

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- It’s a sign of the times – nearly 100 taxis sit idle at a shuttered gas station in Queens.

Now, community members say the rusting taxis have become an eyesore.

“It’s not really good for the neighborhood,” one resident told WCBS 880.

The taxis have taken up space at a closed gas station on Northern Boulevard between 71st and 72nd streets. Though, nobody seems to know why or how the dozens of yellow cabs ended up there.

"I mean this makes me feel horrible. It's a blight on our community,” another Jackson Heights resident said.

City Council member Daniel Dromm said he also wants to know why the taxis have taken up the space illegally.

Dromm claims that the man who own the taxis is Gene Friedman, who was once considered the “Taxi King” and Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney.

It’s no secret that yellow cab drivers have fallen on hard times in recent years. Seven taxi drivers have already taken their own lives this year as debt continues to increase and the value of their medallions continues to plummet.

“The value of these medallions has gone down so much,” Dromm explained. “That being said however, doesn't mean that Mr. Friedman or Mr. Cohen can just dump on this community. They need to do what they have to do and they have to do it responsibly.”

The councilman said it has been a struggle to get the lot cleared. The owner of the property is Zinc Reality and the city already fined the company $5,000 in July.

The fine has yet to be paid and the taxis continue to decay inside the abandoned lot.
