'Christmas Miracle': Man Finds $10,000 In Subway Station

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A Manhattan man made a lucrative discovery on the Upper West Side this past week, but he says there wasn’t a second thought about what he should do with it.

Richard Taverna, 61, found a bag sitting up against a wall in the 66th Street 1 line station.

Taverna told CBS2 he looked inside to see if he could find any identifying info.

“All I saw was a piece of paper, and it was in Russian,” Taverna said.

With no MTA agent at the platform, Taverna said he took the bag home to investigate further.

The piece of paper turned out to be an envelope containing $10,000 in cash.

“There was never a question about keeping it,” Taverna said.

He brought it to the 20th Precinct station house, which was coincidentally the same place a woman had just stopped by looking for her missing money.

The woman had to leave on a flight to Russia, but the NYPD said they’ll get her reunited with the money.

On Twitter, the precinct called it “a minor Christmas miracle in our precinct.”
