City Councilman Proposes Legislation To Help Neighborhoods With Unsolved Crimes

May 07, 2019 - 8:59 am

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — City Councilmember Rory Lancman, who is running for Queens District Attorney, wants to help neighborhoods where major crimes like homicide, rape, felony assault, burglary and car theft often go unsolved.

Lancman’s bill is based on an analysis by the Wall Street Journal showing that the 69th precinct in Canarsie, Brooklyn, had the worst record with four out of 20 homicides unsolved between 2013 and 2017.

During that same period, 64 percent of non-domestic homicides were solved citywide.

Lancman has focused his campaign on making the system fairer for people of color.

An NYPD spokesman tells the journal it is committed to transparency and will review the legislation.
