City To Give Up Federal Funds Rather Than Follow Abortion Rule

June 28, 2019 - 5:43 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday that New York City will give up federal funding for family planning rather than comply with a Trump administration rule that bars federally funded clinics from making abortion referrals.

The city is the first in the country to reject the $1.3 million in federal funding. Mayor de Blasio says the city’s public hospital system will instead rely on New York taxpayers.

“We are seeing rights that were hard fought being taken away from women,” de Blasio said of the decision.

The Democrat, who is currently running for president, says a doctor should never be censored from offering honest and truthful advice to their patients and claims that is what the Trump administration is doing by setting a so-called “gag rule” as part of Title X funding.

“Our public hospitals will continue to give full reproductive care, and that includes information about abortion and access to abortion,” the mayor said.

More than 20 states and organizations have already challenged the policy, which was announced in February, in court.

Last week the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in the Trump administration's favor, allowing the new regulations to stay in effect for now.
