Closures Of Payless Shoe Stores Disappoints New Yorkers

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Payless ShoeSource  is closing all of its remaining approximately 2,100 locations over the next few months, including a location in Washington Heights.

Washington Heights residents were saddened at the closing of a local institution, one which couldn’t necessarily be easily replaced.

There were several reasons for Payless’ demise, including competition from the internet, bigger chain stores, and accumulation of debt.

One shopper said, “It’s so convenient; they are affordable and I am really sad to see them go.”

Payless first filed for bankruptcy in April 2017 but was unable to get back on its feet.

At its height, Payless had over 4,400 stores.

The company says most of its stores will close by May of this year.
