2 Adults, 2 Children Dead In Suspicious Colts Neck Mansion Fire

November 20, 2018 - 6:43 pm

COLTS NECK, N.J. (WCBS 880) —  A fire at a Colts Neck mansion left four people, including two children, dead Tuesday, according to Monmouth County officials.

The fire at an estate on Willow Brook Road was first reported at around 1:30 p.m. Firefighters continued to fight the blaze for hours and the airspace was shut down.

Video from the scene showed giants flames visible through the windows and thick smoke spilling out of the roof.

"The challenges obviously that it is burning so it is difficult to go in there and try to recover remains when there is potential risk of the roof falling in or things like that," Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni said.

Gramiccioni says the fire is being investigated as an arson.

The identities of the deceased were not immediately released. Officials confirmed that a male was found outside the home and the three others were discovered inside. The medical examiner will determine cause of death.

"There was one body that was found out in front of the home. The other three were recovered from inside the home and unfortunately they were burned severely as a result of the fire that they were exposed to," the county prosecutor explained.

Officials refused to say if an early morning fire in Ocean County was related to the Colts Neck fire. Though, public records show both homes were owned by members of the same family.

Gramiccioni says there is no threat to the public. "We have no reason to believe that the community is in any danger at this point in time," he said.

Nearly 20 fire departments responded and one firefighter was injured in a fall while battling the flames. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be fine.

Monmouth County officials said they will provide more information Wednesday morning.
