Columbia Denounces Student's ‘White People Are The Best’ Rant

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Columbia University says it’s investigating video of a student going on a rant about the superiority of white people on campus over the weekend.

The campus paper, Columbia Daily Spectator, reports that a sophomore harassed a group of "primarily black underclassmen" around 4 a.m. Sunday outside Butler Library with a white supremacist rant.

“We invented science and industry, and you want to tell us to stop because, ‘Oh my God, we’re so bad!’” a man said to be Julian von Abele shouts in the video. “We built the modern world.”

(Warning: Video contains some strong language.)

It’s unclear how the exchange between Abele and the other students started.

Abele did not respond to requests for comment from the Spectator, but one student in the group tells the paper he hopes Columbia “takes further action.”

“They should definitely try to talk to the students that were affected by that and ensure everyone’s okay because that’s really hard to internalize,” student Kwolanne Felix told the Daily Spectator.

The deans of Columbia College, the School of General Studies, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science denounced the “racially charged incident” in a statement.

But a group of students calling itself “Justice for Julian” has come out in support of Abele.

The group says the statements made in the video are neither racist nor a threat to people of color.

It’s unclear if Abele will face discipline.
