NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Forget Seventh and Broadway, the center of the universe this weekend is Surf and Stillwell.

The Coney Island Boardwalk and Luna Park were teeming with people on Sunday.

Some of them huddled under the red and yellow Nathan’s umbrellas. Others were hitting the arcades or jumping on rides.

The water was still a bit chilly, but that didn’t stop many from lying out on the beach to catch a breeze and escape the humidity.

“We dipped our toes in the ocean,” one woman said. “We had some pizza, Nathan’s hot dogs. We’ve done it all.”

Memorial Day may only be the unofficial start to the season, but it already felt a lot like summer Sunday, with temperatures in the 80s and clear skies.

“This is the way we start the summer,” a man said. “There’s no better way to do it.”

Memorial Day is expected to be just as nice, with less humidity, more sunshine and highs near 80 degrees.
