NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Coney Island was alive with mermaids on Saturday for the annual Mermaid Parade.

The event brings out the craziness in both participants and spectators.

The marching band is the most traditional aspect of the parade if you ignore the fact that the band leader was a bearded man in a mermaid costume made from old Metro Cards.

"There's no description for the costumes and outfits we've seen," one man said.

There were said to be 800,000 people along the parade route.

There were 35 groups marching down Surf Ave in front of 250 judges picked on a strict criteria.

"For their willingness to be bribed, to be inept, to be inebriated, and to listen to whatever I tell them," the Chief Justice said.

The parade was formed by 36 years ago, and is enjoyed for drinking and costumes.
