NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — One of the climbers at the annual charity stair climb at One World Trade Center on Sunday will be Staten Island Congressman Max Rose.

There’s 2,226 steps to the top and Rose says he will climb them all. He says it’s not about the challenge, but rather about the charity: The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

“The unbelievable work that this organization is doing and the unbelievable service that our law enforcement officials continue to give to this country, then it's worth all the time in the world,” Rose said.

The freshman congressman is an Army veteran who wouldn’t be content to just show up and take some photos.

“I try not to act like an idiot politician and that's what idiot politicians do,” he said.

The event pays special homage to all 9/11 heroes and specifically, FDNY Captain Billy Burke, who stayed behind to save others on the 27th floor of the north tower on Sept. 11, 2001, while commanding other firefighters to get out of the building.

The foundation honors Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers when he learned about the terror attacks.

The organization now provides support for wounded veterans and families of fallen service members and cops.
