Construction To Cause Major Traffic Changes At LaGuardia Airport

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Travelers trying to get to LaGuardia Airport on Thursday were met with major delays on the roadways and some even chose to bail out and walk along the Grand Central Parkway to catch their flights.

But the gridlock trouble isn’t over yet. In fact, drivers should be warned that the traffic is only going to get worse when a number of exits will be shifted to make way for construction projects.

Beginning Saturday at 6 a.m., the westbound Grand Central Parkway exits to LaGuardia will be rearranged. The current exit 6 will be closed and exit 7 will be renamed 6, leading drivers to Terminal B and 94th Street.

A new exit 7 will be opened later, but that will only lead motorists to Terminals C and D.

Drivers are advised to learn about the new traffic pattern and to allow extra time to get to the airport.

The changes will come two days after construction caused a mess on the roadways as LaGuardia experienced the second busiest travel day on record.

“You know 43rd and Madison, I walked yesterday and then I did not even get to Terminal D because of all of the waiting and all the shuttles didn't come back until 4:30,”flyer Laura Leuwendowski said.

She was one the thousands stranded as the airlines tried to recover from Wednesday’s storms. She left Midtown at 1:30 in the afternoon and missed her 3 p.m. flight back to Chicago.

The Port Authority notes that customer service agents will be handing drivers’ cards with the changes at several traffic lights around the airport.
