MINEOLA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A Long Island contractor has pleaded guilty to scamming Sandy victims out of tens of thousands of dollars.

Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said 49-year-old Lee Moser scammed five homeowners whose homes were heavily damaged in Superstorm Sandy out of more than $100,000.

Singas said he took the money from the homeowners and then never started the work, making excuses including that he had to care for his sick mother.

He allegedly spent the money on gas, restaurants, telephone service and other expenditures.

"I'm not going to tolerate people victimizing homeowners who really were at their wit's end," Singas said. "They had dealt with the storm, a devastating storm, they saw their homes being destroyed and at a time when people should've been reaching out and helping them there's people like this who are just trying to make money off of them."

Moser is expected to be sentenced to 45 days in jail as well as having to pay back the homeowners and New York Rising.
