CAMDEN, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- The pipe bomb targeting New Jersey Senator Cory Booker never made it to his office, but the impact was still heavily felt.

“My staff was shaken. We had conversations and obviously are taking precautions. We know that this is an America we're unfortunately living in right now,” Sen. Booker said.

The junior senator explained that there is a distressing and dangerous tone being set across the political spectrum, and blamed President Donald Trump for the rhetoric.

“The overwhelming majority of the terror attacks, over 70 percent of them since 9/11, have been right-wing extremists,” Booker said. “The majority of those are white supremacists who hate gays, who hate Jews, hate blacks. So need to understand those folks are getting license from the rhetoric.”

President Trump needs to do better, according to Booker who claims he will try to do the same.

Booker has been a frequent and critic of Trump and is a putative 2020 Democratic challenger to replace him.
