NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Crime in Central Park is on the rise, according to new NYPD data.

The New York Post reports that crime in the park increased 33 percent in 2019 compared to 2018. There were 68 major crimes there last year, while there were 52 in 2018.

Among those crimes were 21 robberies—up from 15 robberies in 2018. A group of teens were reportedly suspects in five robberies committed in the northwest section of the park.

That’s near Morningside Park, where Barnard College freshman Tessa Majors was stabbed to death, allegedly by a group of teens, during a December robbery.

The new data includes some warnings for parkgoers, among them that about 80 percent of the robberies were committed in secluded, dark pathways of the park.

The park also saw an increase in grand larcenies—28 in 2018 compared to 37 in 2019. Rapes, however, were down year over year, from 3 to 1.
