NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – When he begins his third term next week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he’ll try to guarantee abortion rights with a new law.

The appointment of conservative judges by President Donald Trump has Cuomo concerned about the future of legal abortions.

“They’ve already announced their intention to impose their morality on the nation and roll back Roe v. Wade,” he said.

The governor this week expressed his commitment for a new state law, the Reproductive Health Act, protecting women’s rights.

He said “we must do it in the first 30 days of the new session.”

Donna Lieberman heads the New York Civil Liberties Union. The political winds in Washington, and especially in the White House, have her worried.

“If we’re going to be a safe haven that stands up to the Trump regime’s attack on every basic principle of our democracy, we have to update our abortion law. We have to pass the Reproductive Health Act,” she said.

Lieberman wants New York to be protected regardless of what the courts do.
