19-Year-Old Man Arrested In Sex Assault Of 16-Year-Old Girl In Huntington

November 13, 2018 - 12:44 pm

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A 19-year-old Long Island man has been arrested and charged in connection with the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl.

Police said the victim was walking with a friend around 1:15 a.m. Sunday on Prospect Street not far from Main Street in Huntington when she was attacked.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said the suspect, identified as Daniel Adum of Chichester Road, was on the prowl, waiting to attack.

"They passed him on Main Street and one of the friends noticed that he had exposed himself and she said, 'We need to pick up the pace and get away from him,'" Hart said. "They went to a more secluded area, he came up behind the victim and attacked her."

Her friend was able to run away to try to get help.

Detectives were able to track down the suspect using a description provided by the victim and surveillance cameras that captured the crime along with the suspect's vehicle.

"This was a heinous crime and we brought all resources to bear to take this predator off the streets in less than 48 hours," said Hart. "Despite being a victim of this horrendous crime, the brave teen was able to provide our detectives with a detailed description of her attacker."

Adum, who worked at a catering facility in Woodbury, is charged with criminal sex act and aggravated sexual abuse.

Authorities say he did not know the victim.
