NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The results are in from the statewide survey to find a new design for the New York State license plates.

The Department of Motor Vehicles announced Friday that the winning plate was the fifth option – which features the motto “excelsior” with images of the Statue of Liberty, New York City skyline and Niagara Falls.

Winning License Plate Design

Voting for the plate designs began on Aug. 19 and ran through Sept. 2.

The winning plate was up against four others, one of which included a design of the new Mario M. Cuomo Bridge over the Hudson River.

Option five will now replace the state’s old blue-and-white plates, many of which are more than 10 years old. Once the plates are available, vehicle owners with license plates 10 years old or older will be issued the new ones for a $25 fee.

The new design will officially be available to drivers in April 2020.
