New UK Guidelines Say Take Honey Before Antibiotics To Treat Cough

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A little bit of honey should be your first option to treat a cough

That's according to doctors in England who have been advised to issue the recommendation in a push to battle the overuse of antibiotics, which is making it more difficult to treat infections.

Most coughs are caused by viruses and cannot be treated by antibiotics.

Doctors say a hot drink with honey can improve symptoms, and that the cough will improve on its own within a couple of weeks.

Over-the-counter cough medicines are also suggested for patient self-care.

New guidelines issued by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence lay out when doctors should prescribe self-care alternatives, antibiotics or other care.
