NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A petition is circulating online among drivers who are outraged about an expensive change coming to the George Washington Bridge soon—an end to popular carpool discounts.

The bridge is the busiest in the world for car traffic, and the Port Authority gives deep discounts for people who carpool. If three or more people are in a car, they only have to pay half the regular toll.

But the Port Authority plans to stop the discounts at the beginning of the new year. Drivers are not pleased.

“People are going to say, ‘If they're not going to get a discount, might as well take my own car in,’” one driver told WCBS 880.

“I presently work with like 10 employees that work with me and they live in New Jersey. And they all travel together,” said another driver.

The Port Authority says it’s getting rid of the discount because tolling will soon be automatic, so there will be no person to count the number of people in a car.

A lot of people say the technology does exist to count people. A petition to stop the discount rollback is taking off.

Gov. Phil Murphy has voiced his support for the discount too.
