Off-Duty Officer Killed After Car Crashes Into Tractor-Trailer In Linden

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- An off-duty police officer was killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer in New Jersey early Monday morning.

An Acura RDX carrying two people collided with the cab of a tractor-trailer around 2:15 a.m. on Route 1/9 near Pleasant Avenue in Linden.

"A vehicle was traveling northbound on Route 1, as it approached Pleasant Avenue it collided with a tractor-trailer cab that was stopped at the red light. From then it flipped over and the two pasengers were ejected," Linden Police Lt. Chris Guenther said. "Both cars were severely damaged."

Hillside Police Officer Giovanni Esposito was killed.

"Officer Esposito loved his job and was a warm and friendly person who was well-liked by all who knew him," the department said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. "He prided himself on serving the community of Hillside with diligence and compassion. His death is a profound loss to our department and we will miss him terribly. We wish his family solace and comfort during this extremely difficult time."

A passenger in the vehicle was critically injured.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.

The crash investigation closed Route 1 in both directions between Avenue C and W. Grand Ave. for several hours.

WCBS 880's Steve Burns reports there was a wide debris field with with dozens of evidence markers scattered across all three lanes of the road, denoting all kinds of debris from shredded tires to broken glass and a cell phone in the middle of a crosswalk.
